Why I Support Howard Dean

If you're interested, check out my personal endorsement for Howard Dean, part of the Unofficial Dean Archive. Be sure to add your story, as well!

Prediction: Dean vs. Bush

Here's an encouraging article from The Straits Times, to inspire us during this long haul:

Bush leads, but he's no sure winner - AUG 30, 2003

What else have you seen written about Dean lately? Have you written any opinion pieces to promote Dean in your local media? Let us know!

Thank You Dean Nation!

I was just cruising the blogs and noticed that Dean Nation mentioned Expats 4 Dean rather prominently, in a post discussing recent additions to the Dean roll. Thank you Anna!

We are also still looking for contributing authors to this weblog. We already have Japan, Malaysia, and West Africa covered, but we'd love to incorporate the valuable perspective of expats elsewhere. Contact us if you're interested!

Help Dean Help You

According to the Boston Phoenix (and Joe Trippi), the next 32 days are absolutely crucial. The Dean campaign is hoping to have 450,000 supporters by September 30th. They can only do it with a little help from their friends, a.k.a. all of us. Who have you talked to lately? Share your stories on this thread.

craigslist

I've put up a link under the news section to craigslist political forums. I was not quite sure where to put this. Craigslist is many things to many people.. Should you ever need an apartment in the Bay Area start here. Some people might be looking for rides to Dean events. This is a great place to find them. Craigslist people are nice and generally helpful. They also have great discussions on local and world politics too.. Good source for links to articles that you might have missed.

Thanks

Hi Anthony and everyone here. Yes, I made it on at last.

Although I undoubtedly missed a few cities, this rough tally adds up to 570 people! That's incredible. Thanks to everyone for staying politically involved and choosing to give Dean your time and energy. (And if you haven't joined your local meetup yet, now is the time!)

Out of Left Field

LA Weekly Rolling with people-powered Howard Dean from the highs and lows of spring to the triumphs of summer

by Jamie Wolf

Upside Down Cake

This week Lieberman switched his strategy saying Dean is too far to the right & now we have the Bush campaign saying their guy is going to be out spent by the Democrats! I just got a sudden craving for waffles, with maple syrup :)
Salon.com News | Campaign portrays Bush as funding underdog

"Democrats and their allies will have more money to spend attacking the president during the nomination battle than we will have to defend him," campaign chairman Marc Racicot wrote in the fund-raising e-mail sent Wednesday night. "If you need more convincing the president needs your help, consider what the Democrats are saying. The race is just starting, but their rhetoric is already red-hot."

Howard Who?

I was just chatting with my Aunt Carla in Arkansas a few hours ago & mentioned Howard Dean, that I was doing this site & that he had me fired up along with allot of other people. She asked "Who is Howard Dean" & how could I be involved with it living so far away. I told her about Howard & how he was using the web to get people involved in his campaign.

The short and skinny of this post -I do have a point I think, is that there are tons of people who have no idea who our guy is or what he is about. My aunt is a nice lady who has gone back to school for an art degree, raised a few kids, has a couple of dogs & a husband that hunts. They do fried turkey for Thanksgiving. They vote. Just remember, most people have yet to meet Howard. Once they do this campaign is going to grow like white on rice.

I have not had the fried turkey, I hear it's good though :)

Thoughts from Trippi

If you aren't an active reader of the official blog but for some reason have found yourself on this one, it's worth your while to read campaign manager Joe Trippi's recap of the Sleepless Summer Tour:

What I Will Always Remember

I swear it brought tears to my eyes, and I'm not that kind of gal...

Exciting Maryland Poll

Poll: Bush Support Eroding In Maryland

Also in the article, twenty-five (25) percent of the polled Democrats chose Howard Dean as their favorite candidate; twenty-three (23) percent chose Lieberman. The other candidates were far behind (Kerry at 11%, Gephardt at 10%, the rest in single digits).

8.27.2003

Double-digit lead in NH

Dean surges to double-digit lead over Kerry in New Hampshire: "Pollster John Zogby said Dean's support was in all regions of the state, among men and women, Democrats and independents, liberals and moderates. Dean took support from Rep. Dick Gephardt of Missouri and from undecided voters.
Gephardt, who was at 11 percent in February, dropped to 6 percent. Undecided voters fell from 29 percent to 23 percent.
'His support is really across the board,' Zogby said of the former Vermont governor. "

comments strangitude

We are experiencing some problems with our comments host.
*Update 11:40am 8.28, Switched to Haloscan -Comments are working again. Previous comments are lost -we apologize . Expats4Dean is just a few days old - better to have this happen early rather than later. Haloscan is solid solution -They are not taking any more members but I managed to get us an account - Haloscan likes Dean too! Big thanks goes out to them for making room for us. :)

"We have momentum"

In a Long Presidential Race, Dean Sprints: "Zogby International, an independent firm, is scheduled to release Wednesday a poll showing Dr. Dean leading in New Hampshire with 38 percent of the vote to 17 percent for Senator John Kerry"

UPDATE Dean grabs headlines on drudgereport.com
"Dean expected to raise $10.3 million during 3 months ending Sept. -- more than any other Democrat in similar period save for President Clinton in 1995... Developing... "

Poll: Dean Health Plan Gets Voters' Attention

Dean Readies Ad Blitz

Dean Readies Ad Blitz More Than Year Ahead of Election: "'Running for president of the United States is a marathon,' Mr. Trippi said as Dr. Dean and the campaign's senior staff flew here from San Antonio, Tex., on the last day of a four-day, 10-city national tour. 'We decided we were going to run the first four miles at a 100-yard dash pace. We decided we're going to run the second four miles at a 100-yard dash pace.'"

8.26.2003

Dean in San Antonio

This from the Blog for America, a comment about the rally in San Antonio:

"Wow, what he said about 'white people and black people and brown people all voting together' was incredibly moving. What a great bit when he acknowledged that 'we need to talk about race'."

We do.

In the same speech, Dean invoked the spirit of the civil rights movement; we need that kind of commitment to take our country back. And we need that sense of community he talked about, of knowing that everyone is harmed if the rights or opportunities of one are threatened.

Go Dean!

The Seattle Times: Local News: Thousands turn out for Howard Dean rally
"The Howard Dean campaign is the envy of every other campaign in the nation" because of its success mobilizing people through the Internet, said Metropolitan King County Councilman Dwight Pelz, an early Dean supporter who spoke during the rally.

*Update, Comments are working now, Thanks Heather !

Does our vote really matter?

This is from the Republicans Abroad website "During the 2000 election, President George W. Bush carried the state of Florida on the 5,700 net vote yield from Republicans overseas thanks to a massive international advertising campaign and strong grassroots leadership on the part of Republicans Abroad. In addition, Republicans won two Senate seats and six seats in the U.S. House of Representatives because of Republican absentee ballots cast from overseas."

Your vote does matter

It is easy to feel disconnected from the process when you are living in a far off country. I live in Malaysia and you don't get to talk politics here very often -especially with other Americans. There are an estimated 15 thousand Americans here in a country similar in size and population to that of California -around 22 million.

There are ways to find each other however as many of you know. Some of us work at American companies and find each other there. Some of us have joined American Associations and attend functions at your local American Embassy. Tell your friends about Howard and how he has inspired you. We need to reach out beyond the web -into our expat communities, groups, clubs and business associations this time around. Start a conversation with someone today -it matters.

15,000 at Seattle Rally

This just in: 15,000 people showed up at the Seattle stop of Dean's Sleepless Summer Tour! (The campaign was expecting under 4000 people, based on registration.)

WOW!

UPDATE 9:05pm: The media is reporting figures from 8,000 to 15,000. I will post the actual number here once it is confirmed by the campaign.

Voters Don't Want Bush Re-Elected - Poll

VOANews.com The majority of American voters would not like to see President Bush re-elected to another term according to a poll by Newsweek magazine. Yahoo news is carrying a similar story here

Would consider Clark as running mate

CNN.com - Dean launches 'Sleepless Summer Tour' - Aug. 24, 2003
On Sunday, Dean told CNN's "Late Edition with Wolf Blitzer" that -- if nominated by his party -- he would consider tapping retired U.S. Army Gen. Wesley Clark as a vice presidential running mate.

"Yes," Dean said when asked whether he would consider asking the former NATO supreme commander to join his ticket.

"There would be a great many people, of course, that would be considered as a potential running mate. And I must say, I think it's much too early to discuss potential running mates. I mean, we're five months from the time the first official vote and delegate selection takes place."

Sleepless Summer Tour: Please Contribute!

Heather here.... I'm happy to be a writer for this blog. I've wanted to see more of an expat presence in the Dean community for a long time now, and what to my wondering eyes should appear, but expats4dean! Hooray!

Not much to add at the moment, other than make sure that everyone is following the Dean blog. Please do what you can to contribute to the million dollar challenge. Eligible U.S. citizens can contribute up to $2000 during the primary season, and then another $2000 during the election period. Contribute as much or as little as you'd like, but please consider sending something to the campaign between now and Tuesday!

Welcome Heather from Tokyo4Dean

Expats4Dean would like to welcome Heather from the Tokyo4Dean Yahoo group as our newest member and team blogger. Are you a member of a overseas Dean group on MSN, Yahoo or other forums? Please let us know so we can put up a link here.

WorldNetDaily: Democrats dumb to dump on Dean: "Dean, in fact, governed as such a moderate and fiscal tightwad that in 1996, the DLC - the same organization which now denounces him as some neo-Vladimir Lenin - hailed re-election of 'the centrist Gov. Howard Dean' as evidence of growing 'New Democratic leadership.' " -Bill Press
